Auli is an important ski destination in the Himalayan mountain region. The mountain is in the Uttarakhand region in India. Auli is also commonly known as Bugyal which in the common regional language means meadow. Many French and Australian experts claim that Auli is comparable to some of the best ski resorts in the whole world.

This place however is not very well known compared to Shimla, Gulmarg or Manali. Recently, Uttarkhand which was formerly Uttaranchal has just been formed from the larger state of Uttar Pradesh. Auli was later marked as a tourist destination. The state here is called the DevBhoomi which also mean the “land of gods”. There are many important pilgrim destinations here especially the “char dham”

Auli lies on the way to Badrinath. Auli especially has amazing panoramic views of large peaks which are lofty and have some of the tallest peaks in the world. The slopes here on the Himalayas give you the thrill as though you would be a professional scaling these heights quite regularly. The Gharwal Mandal Vikas Nigam Limited, is a government agency which usually takes care of this resort. They have also imported new snow beaters to maintain the slopes here.

One of the most fascinating things about Auli is that it holds the record for being home to Asia longest Cable car which is about four kilometers long. This place also has a chair lift and a ski lift as well. Skiing here is quite spectacular and there are many skiing paths made here with venues all facilitated to give you an amazing skiing experience. Apart from the skiing routes there are amazing trek routes as well. This place has a training facility of the indo – Tibetan Border police. There is a small temple here which is connected to the great epic of the Ramayana.

The best time to be visit this place would be from the last week of January till about the first week of March. Let us take of look at the things that you could do here in Auli. The skiing facilities provided here are quite good. You have trainers, and guides to assist you with most of everything that you would need. Also, it would be a good idea to pad up completely to avoid getting frost bitten. The skiing activities her are more of the relaxing and recreational kind rather than it being competitive.

It is also one of the most common pastimes here in Auli; the Facilities provided are from GMVNL. There are also training session and they provide you with a course that offers certificates and also a course that doesn’t offer you any certificates. The courses provided could range from four days till about fourteen days. The courses also include food, staying, ski gear and of course, most importantly, the ski guide! It is good to know that there are locals here who rent out ski gear to visitors and they also help you during your ski experience. Although; if you have the time, then it would be best to learn from the actual experts.

The Olympic flame will burn for the twentieth time in Turin, Italy. There are about twenty five hundred different athletes who are from more than eighty five countries. These compete for about eighty four gold medals in about fifteen different disciplines. Madagascar; which is a well known tropical island and Albania, for the first time, would be representing the ongoing appeal for winter Olympics.

The women’s team in Britain in the Women’s curling side is a strong forty people. The ceremony which is going to be held in the Olympics stadium here in Turin; has its opening ceremony that will begin at seven in the evening. This would then; mark the start for the sixteen day long competition. The captain of the English team, Simon Clegg, added that “winning a medal of any color would constitute success”.

The athletes have been training throughout the winter. The snowboard cross is similar to the moto-cross event. Although, this is on snow. The Snow board cross is going to debut this time in the winter Olympics and is one of Britain’s Medal hopes. Zoe Gilings will be representing the womens event for Britain on the seventeenth of February.

The winter Olympics are going to be split up into the Northern Italian city of Turin and then the Piedmonte Mountain area. This also includes all the ski resorts of Sestriere. These are Sauze d’olux and Bardonecchia.

There are indoor events of Ice hockey. Also, short track and long track speed skating and curling. The mountain resorts here will be hosting Alpine style and freestyle skiing along with snowboarding, bobsleigh, luge, skeleton and ski jumping.

Security was a big concern here so; a massive security operation has been organized with about fifteen thousand policemen to form the security. The operation costs about one hundred million dollars.

The slogan of the game is “passion lives here”. Most of the glitches have been fixed and venues have finished being readied. Even the roads; have been painted. The grandstands have been painted as well and the signs have been put in place. A lot of challenges have come up; but these are just the teething problems which happen before any big event. Although this does seem easy on the organizing committee.

The ticket sales have been picking up. The people here in Turin seem to embrace the entire spirit of the winter Olympics, and they seem to be taking it in good spirit even though it is probably causing them a lot of inconvenience.

The red flags that are here in Turin are up for the Olympics and these mark the official routes along with the advertising hoardings that give the winter Olympics its theme. Although apart from this; there is not much else that suggests that the winter games are going to be held here. The mountains here have been decorated with hang out banners that the residents have come out with. The banners are themed on welcoming the games.

The weather so far is juts amazing; there is a fair forecast of snowfall. This however would surely be a miracle in disguise for the many organizers of the Olympics event at Alpine sports. The winter Olympics will start with the mens twenty kilometer biathlon. The opening ceremony of this event is on Friday and the games will be beginning on Saturday.

This is a winter sport in which the concerned athletes compete in both cross country skiing and ski jumping.

The Norwegian soldiers here, have been competing in Nordic skiing since the nineteenth century. The first major competition was actually held in the year eighteen ninety two which were held at Oslo at a skiing festival called Holmenkollen. These events have been held annually. This sport of Nordic combined gained mass popularity n then it was later held in the winter Olympics. Although there is no womens competition for this sport held in the FIS.

The sport was first held in the nineteen twenty four winter Olympics. The Nordic Combined world championships have started since The year nineteen twenty five. The best athletes usually come from Norway, although, Finland, Germany, Austria and the United states are some of the top contenders among all the other countries who participate in the Nordic Combined.

Until the nineteen fifties , first the cross country race would be held n then that was followed by ski jumping. This was apparently reversed; as the distance in cross country racing was too big for ski jumping. There are about six types of combined Nordic events, the three types from them are individual , sprint and team. These three are world championship events. The mass start is the fourth type which was introduced in the year two thousand nine at the championships at the Liberec in the Czech Republic.

Individual

This is apparently the most common form of the race. Also known as individual Gundersen. Before the year two thousand and eight; this event actually consisted of two jumps. One jump was the ski jumping from a normal hill and the other one was a fifteen kilo meter cross country skiing session. The points are scored based on distance an style. The best jumper gets the highest score depending on the height and the skill used in jumping.

Mass start

In this type, a large cross country race is help first. Once the winner is decided a ski jump is set up. The winner of this competition is decided on the Telemark landing. Then winner is then decided on a points based system. This event had first started in the FIS Nordic world ski championship which was held in Liberec in the year two thousand and nine.

In the team categories

Sprint

In this event, only one jump is performed on this large hill. Also the cross country distance from here is about seven and a half kilo meters.

The Hurricane sprint

This is almost similar to the actual sprint competition, however, more time is given based on more distance. The winner usually stands up ahead and the runners up, get to stand behind. The distance that they are standing depends on how much points they scored the last time. The speed of an official cross country skier is around six meters per second.

The Stuff you need

Bindings

These should be attached parallel to the direction of the run. The bindings should be placed so that three quarters of the ski should be used as the front part.

Boots

The boots required are actually pretty high cut with a low cut on the front side. The boots are designed this way so that they could allow the skier to bend forwards during the race.

Connection cord

The cord that actually attached the ski to the boot is mainly what prevents it from wobbling during the ski race.

Jump suit

The suit should be permeable to air. The suit should be of a certain fit, so that the suit fits well on the body and it also is flexible when it needs to be.

Jumping skis

These are almost one hundred and fifty percent the size of the length of the body. These are used mainly for ski jumping on hills.

Check this space in a while to check out more of the incredible sport of Nordic Combined.

When you think of snow, the easiest name that gets you is Europe. It’s not the fault of the continent if it lies to the extreme north of the northern hemisphere. And when it comes to snow, winter sports are what take control of your further thoughts. What can be fun enough more than playing, in the sun, with the snow, accompanied by your friends? It’s dangerous at its first few sights, but let me tell you, it’s worth trying. I am talking about Snowboarding – a sister winter sport to Skiing. The northern countries of Europe, like Austria, France, and Switzerland, are famous for the winter sports actively played up there. There are winter-sport competitions held in which people from the nearby countries arrive in huge numbers to participate.

Laax is one such heaven for snowboarding. It is a brother to the Flims snowboarding area, and comparatively larger in area. Both Laax and Flims are Swiss national treasures for snowboarding. Together, both of them form an area, regarded as the snowboard friendly place in Switzerland. Laax is particularly regarded by the snowboard lovers, who know about it. For beginners, not knowing about Laax, is perfectly okay. The Burton European Open is being held here since the last couple of times. Also, finals of the BRITS series are hosted at these places in the middle of the month of March. It has a full-fledged snowboarding resort and it is linked to Flims. This place is not included in most touring schedules, and hence, the slopes here seem nice, serious and smooth as if untouched. Also, no longer one needs to wait in the queues to get the lifts. Also, there are some good schools here for beginners in this pretty good place to learn. Suitable terrain in the back of the country, with gullies, big bowls, narrow chutes, tree pocked, runs, three half pipes, two boardercross courses and two terrain parks – all at Laax. Guys with good experience and a passion of adventure are suggested to try Vorab Pign and Crap Sogn Gion. These places have some of the best gullies. The café food at the latter one is better than people expect.

All and all, it’s a good experience having a snowboard play at Laax in Switzerland. Accommodation and services are widely spread out at suitable budgets, but I guess a little changes in budgets hardly count when it’s a matter of you enjoyment and fun.

What could surpass the adrenaline rush when you are skiing down an almost 90 degree slope? If the extreme variety of extreme sports is your forte, heli-skiing will interest you. That too in the lofty Himalayan slopes. Heli skiing gives you skiing conditions that are unique, namely, the excellently smooth snow, the extra long descents, extremely steep slopes, naturally contoured terrain and above all, the atmosphere that is so in tune with nature. Heli skiing is said to be un paralleled by any other skiing activity.

Heli skiing

What is Hele skiing all about? In short, you are dropped by helicopter to a peak of your choice. There is no effort involved in scaling the peaks, which could be a pain if the Himalayas is where you are at. It is off-trail skiing and is favored by the more adventurous skiers. Also since the guide and the copter are present always, you can ski without being scared of safety.

The Himalayas

It is but common knowledge that the Himalayas are at the very top of any list of skiing destinations. If the sheer height of the peaks (5000-6500 m peaks!) is not incentive enough, the client-guide ratio of 3-4 per group, which is the lowest in the world and the diverse local culture and geography that differentiates the mighty Himalayas from the rest may be enough. There is an innumerable variety of slopes for your choice.

Where?

Himachal Pradesh, India

Manali in Himachal Pradesh is the base for heli skiing in Himachal Pradesh. Manali is about 500 km far from New Delhi. There are many resorts that offers package heli skiing deals with accommodation, guides and travel thrown in. Hanuman Tibba, Deo Tibba,Rohtang pass and Chanderkhani Pass are the main areas offering heliskiing.peaks of upto 14000 in height are observed.

Kashmir, India

Kashmir is also a preferred heli skiing destination. This state is described as a veritable paradise. In spite of security issues; the tourism industry is improving day by day.

Gulmarg and Khilanmarg are the chief heli skiing spots in Kashmir. Skiing here goes on between December to March annually.

Nepal

Nepal is home to the eight highest mountains in the world.Until recently, before permission was granted for heli skiing in Nepal, it would have taken 45 days or more to scale the peaks, with the risks involved enormous. This difficulty has now been surmounted, and Nepal is now open for hele skiing.

The peaks of Everest, Dhauligiri, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Cho oyu, the Dolpo regions, and more are excellent for heli-skiing.

The biathlon is a term that is used to describe any kind of sporting event which is made up of two disciplines.

Although, the Biathlon in winter sports involves cross country skiing and then rifle shooting. The popular variations are the summer biathlon. This combines cross country running with rifle shooting. The sport was originated by Norwegian soldier who used to use to do this for the sake of military training.

Later on, the worlds first ski club called Trysil rifle and ski club was established in Norway in the year eighteen hundred and sixty one. This was used to promote national defense at a local level apparently. This was then called military patrol. The exercise involved skiing and shooting. And was later incorporated into the Olympic winter games in the year nineteen ninety four. This was then demonstrated again in the nineteen twenty eight and many other times, years later.

However; this sport did not get Olympic recognition as, few countries disagreed with the rules. Later on the sport was introducing to the Russian and Swedish winter sports councils. They found out that the crowds loved it and the sport was thoroughly enjoyed. The new found popularity that came with this game while it was being introduced to the crowds; helped the sport to gain entry into the winter Olympics.

The first world championship for this sport was help in the year nineteen fifty eight. The even was held in Austria. In the year nineteen ninety two even women were allowed to participate in this sport in the Olympics.

The earlier competitions had ammunition of 0.30 caliber bullets. Now however, 0.22 caliber ammunition was standardized. Also; the shooting distances were up to two hundred and fifty meters, however now it has been standardized to one hundred and fifty meters for shooting.

The governing body for this game was founded in the year nineteen forty eight. The body was called ‘Union Internationale De Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon’. This governing body was responsible for standardizing rules for the biathlon and the pentathlon.

There are different competitions for this game.

The three most famous events that take place about this sport are:

The biathlon at the Olympic Games

Biathlon World championships

Biathlon world cup

The basic concepts for this game are for each round of shooting, the athlete gets five targets. Every time the target is missed, the athlete loses points.

There is a one hundred and fifty meters penalty loop. These take about twenty or thirty seconds to complete for the best athletes. This also depends heavy on the weather conditions. If this penalty round is done, and then one extra minute is added to the athletes total time.

They can use an extra cartridge that is located at the shooting range. This cartridge can be used to finish off the target. This way, there can only three extras that are available for each round. Every time a target is missed the athlete to save points needs to complete one penalty round.

To keep a track of the progress of the contestants, the number of targets is counted and once the shooting rounds are done then spilt times are calculated.

There are large screens displaying the athletes perform their feats. These large screens are usually set up at these biathlon arenas. Also there are information graphics that keep showing up on the screens regarding the points, times and time differences of the closest contestants. Any kind of cross country techniques are allowed in this biathlon. This basically means that there is free technique which is most preferred. This is because this form of skiing is the fastest. To move along the track, the athlete can only use skies and ski poles.

The rifle that the athlete carries weighs about here and half kilos. This also includes the ammunition that is used along with the magazine on his or her back during the race. The rifles used either Bolt Action or the Fortner action for firing. Every shooting round has about five circular targets which have to be hit during each round of shooting. When sitting the target diameter is about two inches and when in the standing position, the target is about four and a half inches. Most of these targets that are used in the biathlon are mostly self indicating. And when the target is hit, it turns from black to white. This gives the shooter and the spectators an instant visual feed of whether the target has been taken out or not.

There are different competition formats

Individual

This is a twenty kilometers race which apparently is the oldest biathlon event. The distance is spread over five laps. The athlete has about four shots in any of the shooting lanes.

Sprint

The sprit is for a stretch of ten kilometers for men and about seven and half kilo meters for women. This distance is skied over three laps.

Check this space out to find out more of this wonderful Olympic sport.

Located in Tyrol of Austria, St Anton am Arlberg is a famous ski resort nestled at 1,304 m above sea level in the Tyrolean Alps. With several aerial tramways and chairlifts up to 2,811 m, St. Anton offers the best experience in skiing in the Arlberg region. St. Anton, on the Rosanna River, is situated on the east-west major rail line running between Austria and Switzerland. The entire region has over 82 cable cars and ski lifts, 260 km of clean pistes, and 184 km of deep-snow runs. If you are a fan of skiing, you will definitely like to make a trip here where the Alpine World Ski Championships in 2001 were conducted.

Arlberg is the identity that covers five scenic towns across which the skiing runs are spread. The St. Anton town’s center is a pedestrian zone, while the east and west edges offer the Kapall, Valluga, and Schindler peaks providing skiers with a vertical of 1,500 m for skiing. For the experts, there exists a guided skiing terrain with less frequently groomed ski routes namely, Schindler, Mattun, and the rear of Valluga (2,811 m) down to Zürs. In addition, there are many off-piste routes in the area for the experts, which cannot be explored without a guide. On the other hand for the intermediates, Rendl is the best route to discover on the other side of town. In fact, most people finish their day at the Rendl Beach that is energetic outside bar with a sun terrace and tea dances.

Looking for more skiing areas? Lech, Stuben, and St. Christoph are waiting for you. Alpe Rauz, located close to St. Christoph, offers a superb cruising trail. So, as you decide to experience this route, have a Hiess Skocolade (hot chocolate), an 820 m vertical slope via which you reach Stuben from Ulmer Hutte. Lech and Zürs are also beautiful with classic chalets. The mountains here, namely Madloch and Trittkopf, are graced with the slopes of all levels. Situated 600 feet above Lech, Oberlech is a challenging satellite resort for families.

Norway is undisputedly one of the most attractive places to visit on earth. This place has undisputed beauty. The mountain ranges are rugged and beautiful. The fjords and the glacier here give Norway a rough and simple feel which is responsible for getting in most of the tourists in to this region. The travelers here are accustomed to the many slick cities in most of Europe and then when the come here, the feel is entirely different.

Oslo, being the capital of Norway, still has a much laid back atmosphere. The city has many parks they the people visit quite regularly. Also there are monuments, museums, and the many places that have been arranged in his place so that people can come here and spend their time visiting these places.

In the north, Norway goes all the way to the Arctic Circle. This place is no doubt cold, although it is vast, varied and of course interesting.

It is quite common to find polar bears, seals, walruses sitting on a floating icy mantle or near a tree. Although; there are certain places don’t have any trees around. The plain snow covered lands go on for miles and miles.

Norway was a very active and popular country during the early hundreds. At that time, the Vikings had conquered Scotland, Ireland, Normandy, franc and Sicily.

During the later half of the millennium, Norway completely lost all its power and the Black Death killed about half of the population here during the fourteenth century.

After being fought over by Denmark and Sweden, norm way finally got its independence in nineteen hundred and five.

During the Second World War, German troops occupied Norway and later on went to become part of the Schengen union of countries.

Reindeer sledding is an amazing experience. If you want to explore the wild in the beautiful snow atmosphere of Norway then you should definitely get on of the reindeer sleds. Only in the Sámi heritage of the Norwegian people, the sledding of reindeers happens. This has huge symbolic meaning dating back from the tales of Santa Claus going across the world on a reindeer sled.

This place has large untouched areas of wilderness that give room for exploring and cultural findings. This place has adapted to extreme temperatures are climatic conditions. The role of nature in these parts of the world is quite hard. Sometimes the cold even gets to the food.

Reindeer herding was apparently the main traditional livelihood method for the Sámi people from this land.

The Sámi people eat reindeer meat and they also use them as transportation solutions going where no vehicle can. Famous reindeer dishes are roasted reindeer meat and smoked reindeer heart. If you go around this area, you are sure to be offered some reindeer meat.

There are also various reindeer mustering, lassoing and riding lessons that are carried out. Once you are here you should defiantly also try your hand at ice fishing and check out the igloos.

Located in the center of the Southern Alps in New Zealand’s South Island, the Craigieburn Valley Ski Area is the skiing site for the intermediate and advanced skiers featuring a vertical range of 1308 to 1811 m, 600 hectares of skiable area, and 3 fast rope tows. With good ups and better downs, the area is adorned with the steep narrow chutes, wide powder bowls, less populated runs offering the grand view of the Craigieburn Range. As the terrain is more appropriate for the intermediate to advanced skier, a knowledgeable beginner with a firm approach will surely learn much only in a day at Craigieburn. Due to the mountain providing a few easily accessed skiing slopes in the world, many kids have bloomed with their skills on the snow speaks speaking tremendously.

Craigieburn is much more than only a skiing paradise with its lazy slope side seasonal accommodation for the snow lovers who come from all over the globe to tell a lot of their experiences at the ski lounge and at night. The Craigieburn Valley Ski resort offers many ski lodges without any gear to hire and conducts ski touring expeditions. The resort is very close to one of the most famous skiing area called the Broken River whose ski pass system is shared. So, you can also expect skiing between the two with some skinning.

Craigieburn is a non-profit association dedicated to skiing and snowboarding without any commercial motive. It is world-renowned site due to its steep terrain of which more than 50 percent is ranked as advanced. Do not expect grooming here, but look for excellent hiking and ski touring choices such as the Middle Basin that is a 600 m bowl back to the access road often evaluated with the heli-skiing. Also, check out the Hamilton Peak that is quite famous that takes the skier to the upper Hamilton face and to the Broken River ski field lift system with no further sanction. The several backcountry and touring options via Middle Basin into North Middle, True North basins, and Mt Manson are also among the recommended options.

Season

July to October

Activities/Highlights

Hike and Ski Tours:
Snowgo is famous for its fully guided ski tours here and to other club fields for at least 4 days or 7 nights. If you are worries about the cost, do not be; as it is very much affordable. Its tours are ideal to explore multiple ski areas. One more popular one is the Black Diamond Safaris that offer ski tours to Craigieburn, Olympus, and Broken River club fields. Many hiking and ski-touring opportunities are beyond the tour area here such as Castle or North Middle Basin where you can ski out to the lodge or to the access road after a 15 minutes walk. Other options are beyond North Middle, in Allan’s Basin, or Broken River or a full day or overnight trip to the New Zealand Alpine Club. Note: Be in groups, recognize your Snow craft, be dressed in avalanche transceivers, and consult the Skifield manager or field staff before starting. Never DISOBEY the closures.

Adventure Activities:
These include ice-climbing in the area, but it is only for those who are experienced. Regardless of this, you can still try it out with a guided tour in other places such as the Fox Glacier.

Cave Stream Scenic Reserve:
Located at 5 minutes drive east of Flock Hill Lodge, this is flanked by the limestone rocks making an ideal perfect picnic spot and for walking. There is no guide here and that it takes about one hour to explore this. Do note that the water’s level in the cave is up to the waist, so be alert here if you go in. Tip: Carry a torch, wear warm attire, and be in durable footwear.

Mountain Biking:
Consider at Flock Hill Lodge around which this sport is undertaken by many tourists and locals alike. The farm is 14,000 hectares and on your bike, you can spot some sheep, cattle, deer, and geological features making your voyage interesting along many km of trails. Take a bike on hire and thoroughly understand the route of biking. If you wish, also know about the various spots to go for trekking too.

Facilities

Eating on the Mountain in the day lodge above the base of the 3rd tow offering wonderful views, especially the deck where you can lie around in the sunshine. See what activities are available on the slope where food and drinks such as a great coffee and delicious hamburgers cooked on the BBQ are available. You will need to buy a bottle of water and also need to carry all rubbish with you as there are no rubbish bins.

Ski School Group instruction at $22 per hour and private lessons at $45 per hour are offered.

Note: No ski or snowboard is there on hire.

Reaching the Craigieburn Valley

From Christchurch, Craigieburn is at 1.5 hr drive (110km) on highway 73. The road up to skifield is 6 km, which twists softly upwards via a scenic beech forest. You can drive this road with any motor vehicle, except for the camper vans that are parked at the base of the road. It is much recommended to have 2 wheel drives.

Accommodations

You can consider booking a basic on-mountain accommodation at Craigieburn Valley ski area where private and shared bunk rooms exist. If you aim is to explore several ski areas with a luxurious stay, then head to the Flock Hill Lodge which is a farm with motel and cottage-style accommodation located at a few miles down the road from the Craigieburn ski area.

Vermont is the home to many great skiing resorts such as Stowe Mountain Resort, Stratton Mountain Resort, Sugarbush Resort, and Smugglers’ Notch Resort. However, in this article, I am going to focus on the Killington Mountain Resort & Ski Area that is the largest ski area in the eastern North America with its 17000 skiers per day. Located near Killington in Vermont, Killington offers maximum number of trails – 141 and the greatest vertical drop – 3,050 feet (930 m) along with maximum most skiing on its varied terrain operated by the highest capacity lift system of the East.

Explore the six linked mountains and the Pico Mountain where you can experience the matchless range of skiing. Snowboarders find themselves in a challenge as they get ready to cover the longest terrain park in the East. High elevation scenery, mountain-to-mountain voyage via over 80 miles of trails, and the beauty of Vermont just put you on the onset of a great winter vacation in Killington.

The base elevation is 1,165 feet (355 m), while the summit elevation is 4,241 feet (1,293 m). The total skiable area is 1,209 acres on which the longest run is of 53, 850 feet. With annual snowfall of only 250 inches and snowmaking, some 71 percent of trails fall in this activity to ensure consistent snow throughout the skiing period. The 141 trails and 22 lifts stretch across seven mountain peaks – 5 Surface Lifts, 2 Double Chairs, 4 Triple Chairs, 4 Quad Chairs, 5 HiSpeed Quads, and 2 Gondolas (8 People). The trail distribution is 28% for the beginners, 33 % for the intermediate, and 39 % for the advanced ones.
