Sugar Bowl Ski ResortSugar Bowl Ski Resort is a beautiful medium-sized ski and snowboarding area in Lake Tahoe region in northern Placer County near Norden in California in the United States. Along with Squaw Valley and Northstar, Sugar Bowl Ski Resort is among the major ski resorts on the northern shore of Lake Tahoe. The ski resort, one of the most environment-friendly, is located along Doner Pass of Sierra Nevada mountain range, about 74 km west of Reno in Nevada. Sugar Bowl was founded by none other than the famous Walt Disney and it is one of the oldest resorts at Lake Tahoe and the oldest chair-lift served resort in California. Soda Springs and Truckee in California and Reno in Nevada are the nearest cities to Sugar Bowl. The resort gets big crowd on weekends from Sacramento, San Francisco and Oakland.

Sugar Bowl, which is among the few remaining privately owned resorts in Lake Tahoe area, was the first ski area in California to have a chairlift and also the first in the United States to install a gondola lift.

Sugar Bowl, although has been undergoing development and modernization in terms of high-speed lifts, terrain parks and other infrastructure, yet when one steps into this resort, a sense of traditionalism awaits him/her. The resort has a few old ski chalets, Inn at Sugar Bowl, which is the base lodge, a child care centre and a ski shop. Life is quite on a slow move at Sugar Bowl, and the tourists wouldn’t really complain.

Sugar Bowl Ski resort has three main peaks, namely, Mt. Judah, which has its own parking lot and base lodge; Mt. Lincoln and Mt. Disney. All the three peaks are connected.

Skiing at Sugar Bowl:

The Sugar Bowl Ski resort experiences a high rate of annual sugar bowl skiingsnowfall (about 500 inches). The terrain here is mostly meant for the intermediate skiers (about 45 per cent) followed by that for the experts (38 per cent) and the beginners (17 per cent). The resort has a summit elevation of 8,383 feet while the base elevation is 6,883 feet. The vertical drop is 1,500 feet. Total skiable area at Sugar Bowl is 1,500 acres.

The resort has 14 lifts in all, including 1 gondola, 5 high-speed quads, 2 quads, 3 doubles, 1 surface lift and 2 moving carpets. There are also 3 parks and 1 pipe at Sugar Bowl. The resort has 94 runs, the longest of which measures 5 km.

The Lodge at Sugar Bowl is the best place to stay at Sugar Bowl  if one is in lookout for ski-in, ski-out access to the ski resort. It is the only snowbound lodge in Truckee/Tahoe area.
