Red Mountain Ski Resort is located on Granite and Red Mountains in Rossland in the West Kootenay region of British Columbia in Canada (about 8 km north of the Canada-US border). The ski resort is one of the oldest skiing hills in North America with its origin dating back to as early as the 1900s when the Red Mountain Ski Club was formed. Rossland ski area features natural playground for adventure seekers as well as all modern amenities. It has been recently designated as Canada’s best Outdoor Town by ‘Explore’ magazine.
Reaching Rossland:
By air:
Rossland is close to Spokane, WA International Airport (2.5 hour drive) and Kelowna, BC International Airport (3.5 hour drive). Also, one can avail daily flights from Vancouver and Calgary to smaller airports like Castlegar, which is just half an hour’s drive from Red and Trail Airport (15 minutes drive from Red). Resort-owned shuttle vehicles operated between the smaller airports like Castlegar and Trail. The resort is served by resort-owned shuttles from the airports.
Spokane Airport is served by air carriers like Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air, United/United Express, US Airways and Delta, Skywest Airlines while the Kelowna Airport is served by Air Canada, Horizon Air and WestJet. On the other hand, Air Canada Jazz links Castlegar and Pacific Coastal Airlines flights flies into Trail Airport.
Skiing at Red Mountain:
Similar to various other ski resorts in British Columbia, Red Mountain Ski Resort also is known for its light, dry powder with a yearly snowfall of nearly 300 inches. It does not have any snowmaking arrangement. The two main peaks of the resort, the Red Mountain and the Granite Mountain, are served by four lifts (including quad chair, double chair and triple chair), a T-bar that gives access to 1,585 acres of skiable area (total skiable area is 1,686 acres) and a magic carpet. The base elevation of the ski area is 1,185 metres while the top elevation is 2,072 metres. The resort has a vertical of 887 metres. The resort has a total of 87 designated trails (of which 90 per cent belongs to the intermediates and the experts while 10 per cent belongs to the beginners). The longest run is 7 km.
