Fascinating skiing at Sauze d’Oulx



Sauze d'oulx ski resortSauze d’Oulx is a commune located in the province of Turin in piedmont Region in northern Italy and very close to the French border. It is located 80 km from the city of Turin in Val di Susa near the feet of Monte Genevris (2,536 metres). Sauze d’Oulx is a famous skiing resort in Alpine Italy. Along with the villages of Sestriere, Pragelato, Claviere, Cesana Torinese, San Sicario and Montgenèvre (in France), Sauze d’Oulx makes up Lia Lattea skiing area. The location of Sauze d’Oulx at the lap of nature has facilitated its reputation as a remarkable winter sports venue. The famous winter resort here called Sportinia was a favourite destination of the old Turin aristocracy. The first skiers had arrived at Sauze from Switzerland way back in the 1890s. Sauze also hosted the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics. The resort elevation here is 1,382metres while the top elevation is  2,701 metres.

Skiing at Sauze d’Oulx:

A typical skiing day at Sauze begins with people travelling up the hill either by foot or bus to catch a lift upto the Sportina Plateau. From here, ski lifts and runs head towards various directions. Beginners can get various lessons on skiing here. The skiing season at Sauze d’Oulx extends from December till late April. Those at intermediate level can try the gigantic snowy ball around Sestriere or ski at the long blues and reds back to Sauze. It anybody plans to ski at Montgenèvre, it is always wise to start early and return early as well.

Gran Pista to Prariond that descends 650 vertical metres is one of the exciting trails for the intermediates and experts. It has also played host to races in the past.  Run 29 and Canale Colò are also famous runs (the latter named after famous Italian racer Zeno Colò).

A beginners’ nursery slope is located at the base of Clotes chairlift although teaching is mostly imparted at Sportin Plateau. Sauze, however, offers limited  off-piste skiing opportunities.

  • Child care:
    Dumbo Kindergarten near the resort centre looks after young children from little babies to age six. Advance booking is must before the children are admitted here. Scuola Sci Sauze Sportina, on the other hand, looks after children aged four and above.
  • Shopping:
    There are near about 30 shops at Sauze d’Oulx including those of sports, furniture, gifts, grocers and others.Turkish Bath Hamam Arnica Erboristeria Profumeria is a perfume shop while EI Roet is known for its gift selection.
  • Eating out:
    Gourmandise Gally and Portico Gastronomia are known for the regional specialities. There are as many as 30 restaurants that mostly serve Italian or occasionally English food at reasonable prices. Del Borgo is a known pizzeria while Le Meizoun Ed La Pata Eisutta is one of the best spaghetterias here. The Village Café is an ideal place for typical Italian food.
  • Splashing out at the wellness centre of the Grand Hotel La Torre. Hydromassage and spells at Tepidarium and Hammam Turkish steam baths are popular ways of distressing
  • Après ski in Sauze d’Oulx:
    There are about 25 bars here. Wine Bar Gran Trun, Paddy McGinty’s Irish pub are busy pubs here. Varioteca Gina, is known for the night dancing.

    Turin at a distance of 79 km is the nearest airport to Sauza d’Oulx.

A ski bus service operates around the resort and links various lift base stations.
