Snowbird ski resortSnowbird ski resort is located in the heart of Wasatch National Forest in Little Cottonwood Canyon in Utah in the United States.

Snowbird ski resort shares the canyon with Alta Ski Area in the east. Both the resorts receive over 500 inches of annual snowfall per year, which makes it the greatest area of snowfall in the continental United States outside the Cascades. However, unlike the humid and wet snow of the Cascades, Snowbird experiences an unusually dry and powdery snow. Snowbird, along with Alta were ranked number one in the list of ski resorts in North America in 2008 by Outside Magazine. Snowbird ski resort was opened in 1971. In 1991, by means of purchasing the Canyon Racquet & Fitness Club on Wasatch Boulevard at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon, Snowbird expanded into the Salt Lake Valley. Zermatt in Switzerland is the sister resort of Snowbird.

Snowbird ski resort has a total skiable area of 10 square kilometres with a vertical drop of 988 metres from the summit of Hidden Peak. The resort covers three drainage areas, namely, Peruvian Gulch, Gad Valley and Mineral Basin.

Reaching Snowbird ski resort:
  • By air:
    Snowbird ski resort is located about 46 km from Salt Lake Airport. It is connected by more than 600 daily non-stop flights from major cities of the US.
  • By road:
    The ski resort is located about 38 km downtown Salt Lake City and 7 km east of the suburb of Sandy.
Facilities at Snowbird ski resort:
  • Snowbird has 11 ski lifts (4 high-speed quads, 6 doubles and a surface lift), an aerial tram and a 600-foot tunnel enclosing an one-way conveyor lift connecting Peruvian Gulch to Mineral Basin. This allows easier access for the beginners and intermediates to new terrain.
  • Snowbird offers one of the most accessible mountain meeting destinations in North America.
  • Top elevation is 3,353 metres while the base elevation is 2,365 metres.
  • Snowbird comprises 85 runs (27% for beginners, 38% for intermediates and 35% for advanced). The longest run is Chip’s Run, which is 2.5 miles long.
  • Arrangement for night skiing
  • The ski area has 11 lifts including one aerial tram and 10 chairlifts
  • Snowbird Terrain Park is located on the lower part of the Big Emma run.
