The century old skiing resort of Åre
Åre is one of the biggest skiing destinations in North Europe, which was founded way back in 1909. It is situated in the Jämtland county close to the Swedish-Norway boundary. Östersund is the neÅrest city to Åre.
Åre has five different skiing centres besides a good number of great slopes including black pistes and easy slopes for the kids and beginners. The skiing Årea here is spread over an Årea of 4.7 squÅre kilometres.
There Åre also great slopes for snowboarding and telemarking. Heli-skiing is available, and there Åre 500km (311 miles) of cross-country skiing trails. The resort has a very good ski centre for families with young children.

Skiers’ paradise called Grindelwald
Grindelwald is one of the oldest ski resorts in Europe that dates back to the late 19th century. Grindelwald is located in Interlaken district within Bernese Oberland canton in the south-central Switzerland. Grindelwald village is located at an elevation of 1,034 metres above sea level in the Bernese Alps. The top elevation of the resort is 2,971 metres.
Skiing at Grindelwald:
Skiing season at Grindelwald begins from mid December to mid April. Skiers here can choose to ski either at Grindelwald’s First ski area or at the Kleine Scheidegg and Mannlichen sector that spreads into the neighbouring Wengen.

At Prince Charles’ favourite ski resort
Klosters, located in Prättigau/Davos district in Graubünden canton of Switzerland, is one of the finest ski resorts in the world. It resembles a classic Alpine village, moderate and unassuming in character. However, the fact that Klosters is the favourite resort of Prince Charles (one of the cable car to the top of Gotschnagrat is named the ‘Prince of) makes it a special place visited regularly by high profile people and paparazzi. Klosters, along with the nearby Swiss town of Davos (8 km), offer wide range skiing facilities. Flüela Pass and the Engadine are located close to Klosters and Davos. The resort elevation is 1,179 metres while the top elevation is 2,884 metres.

Verbier: Europe’s premier ski resort
Verbier is a world famous ski resort in Switzerland, blessed with world standard terrain and legendary après ski facilities. The chalet-style architecture adds to Verbier’s charm all the more. Verbier is located at the French speaking part of Valais region in Val de Bagnes in southwestern Switzerland. Verbier is one of the largest holiday resorts in the Swiss Alps.
Verbier is comparatively a new ski resort in Europe where serious skiing activities started as late as 1970s when the village of Verbier was linked up with other local villages to constitute Les Quatres Vallées ski resort. A ‘Heavenly’ ski resort
Heavenly ski resort is one of the largest ski areas located to the south of Lake Tahoe, a large freshwater lake (also North America’s largest alpine lake) in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and to the east of San Francisco in the USA. Heavenly is situated on the border between the states of California and Nevada with skiing bases on both sides. It is Tahoe’s higest resort with the peak elevation of 3,068 metres.
Heavenly experiences abundant snowfall (360 inches of annual rainfall) along with a good snowmaking system, which ensures a longer skiing season from November till May. The resort has witnessed huge scale investment over the past decade that has upgraded its lifts and the resort base transforming Heavenly from a ‘big’ into a ‘world class’ resort. The twin resorts of Morzine-Avoriaz
Morzine and Avoriaz are two neighbouring ski resorts in Portes du Soleil ski area, one of the world’s largest ski regions spread over in France and Switzerland (it has twelve resorts in all). Geographically, these two resorts are located in Haute Savoie region in southeastern France, close to the Swiss border.
History:
Avoriaz is located in the heart of Portes du Soleil (a region in the Alps). Avoriaz is located at altitude above Morzine, one of the skiing towns that had got its first lifts in the early 1930s. It was around 1965 when former French downhill Olympic champion Jean Vuarnet was given the task of developing the skiing of Morzine and he came up with the plan of setting up a new skiing area on the north of the Hauts Fort mountain and the Fornet-bowl. The classic ski destination of Les Gets
Les Gets is a small, picturesque resort, which is located in the Chablais region of Haute Savoie province of Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. The region is part of the Portes du Soleil ski area, near the Franco-Swiss border. Les Gets is part of the gigantic Portes du Soleil ski area (includes twelve villages on either side of the Franco-Swiss border) in the Haute Savoie region. However, one must keep in mind that Les Gets, if compared to many other resorts, lies at a lower elevation of the Alps which implies that snow is not always guaranteed and skiing season is a bit smaller. The resort elevation is 1,172 metres while the top elevation is 2,002 metres. Les Gets has 66 groomed trails while there are 52 lifts to access them. Les Gets has over 650 km of piste.

Fantastic skiing at Val-d’Isère
The commune of Val-d’Isère is located in Tarentaise Valley (some of world’s best ski resorts like Paradiski including Les Arcs, La Plagne and Les Trois Vallées including Courchevel, Meribel and Val Thorens are located here) in Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France near the Franco-Italian border. Val-d’Isère is situated on the border of the Vanoise National Park, the oldest national park in France that was created in 1963 (Vanoise National Park is contiguous with Gran Paradiso National Park in Italy). The Face de Bellevarde, probably the steepest piste in the valley, was the venue of the men’s downhill race during the 1992 Winter Olympics.
