Vemdalen: A complete family ski resort



Vemdalen ski resortVemdalen ski resort located in the Härjedalen Municipality in Jämtland County in central-western Sweden offers some of the most varied skiing opportunities. The resort is reputed for its picturesque beauty. Vemdalen got its first six-seater chairlift in 2008 that enhanced the comfort of the resort by great degree.

Skiing at Vemdalen:

Vemdalen comprises three regions, namely, Björnrike, Vemdalsskalet and Klövsjö/Storhogna, each of which are equipped with lifts and runs, both gentle and steep. Vamdalen also offers some of the best off-piste facilities in the world as well. In addition, there are nearly 300km (180 miles) of well-prepared cross-country skiing tracks in the region.

Vemdalen is an ideal ski resort for beginners of all ages. The long and wide slopes here are well groomed and they lead back to a sole central meeting point at the base of the slopes. Vemdalen’s ski school (with the motto ‘It’s Never Too Late to Learn’) is a great place to learn the basics of the snow sport.

The intermediates too have a great scope to ski here. Vemdalsskalet is suitable for beginners and intermediates.

The advanced skiers can opt for the combined resorts of Vemdalen, Bjornrike and Klovsjo/ Storhogna to test their ability. The ski school also trains on specialist courses including off-piste skiing, carving, telemark skiing and others. Snowboarders can also enjoy at the fun parks including the new park at Skalsfjallet. Floodlit skiing is also held at Vemdalen two evenings per week until the end of March each year.

Skiing  season at Vemdalen generally lasts from late October until May. About half of the resort’s slopes have snow making facilities.

  • Family fun:
    Vemdalen is an ideal skiing spot for family entertainment, thanks to several gentle slopes.  Björnrike is particularly suitable for the youngsters.
  • Shopping:
    Vemdalen has several shops, including those groceries and essential item stores. The village has a florist, a Storhogna Högfjällshotell & Spabaker, a gift shop, a pharmacy as well as a shop of antique products. Local handicrafts are also available here.
  • Splashing out:
    Avail spa treatment and massage services at Storhogna Högfjällshotell & Spa. Gymming and swimming are other modes of relaxation here.
  • Après ski:
    although not much known for après-ski activities, Vemdalen has a nice relaxed and laid-back feeling. Evening entertainment is available at various places. Baggen, for instance, offers exciting après ski while Hotell Klövsjöfjäll and Storhogna Högfjällshotell & Spa are also worth a visit.
  • Eating out:
    Hildings Krog is the place to get top quality local food. One can get a fantastic view of Hovdebacken, one of the slopes at Vemdalskalet. Skalets Bar & Bistro serves wide ranging cuisines and that too at quite moderate price. Björnrike Centrat has three eateries, offering à la carte and pizza.
Accommodation:

The lodging facilities in Vemdalen are concentrated mainly in town or in the slopes. It has a great many number of hotels, bread & breakfasts, guest houses, private cabins and hostels.

Reaching Vemdalen:
  • By air:
    Sevag (60 km) is the nearest airport to Vemdalen.
  • By rail:
    Östersund (110 km) is the nearest railhead to Vemdalen.
Other locations:

Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden, is located about 500 km from Vemdalen. Gothernburg and Trondheim (Norway) are located at about 700 km and 240 km from Vemdalen, respectively.

Getting around:

Frequent bus services operate between the skiing points (it runs atleast four days week with the frequency increasing during the peak season). The distance between the three areas of Vemdalen is too big to be covered by foot, although they are linked by cross-country skiing tracks.
