Switzerland is known to be home to slopes full of snow and the Wengen Ski Resort is no exception. It is situated in probably the most stunning location of the Swiss Alps Mountains and has sub zero temperatures and most people consider the place to be the ‘Dream’ holiday destination.
The area boasts of long and gentle runs and is wonderful place to ski for the intermediate skier. There’s a lot to explore for the Beginners as well in the center of the complex. However, the only issue here is for the Expert skiers, who find very limited terrain to their tastes. As one is skiing above 2000 meters, the quality of snow is considered reasonable.
One can experience breathtaking alpine scenery of the Jungfrau, Monch and the Eiger, full of the traditional Swiss village feel. Another feature of the resort is cars are banned from accessing the resort. They need to be parked in the valley below. A funicular train line provides the only direct access to the resort.
Wengen has 3 airports within 2 hours of driving distance. The closest airport is the Berne Airport, which is just an hour’s drive away. Hence, if you are planning a short trip or a ski weekend, Wengen is the perfect destination.
There are 19 lifts in the resort with a carrying capacity of 20,200 skiers / snowboarders per hour.
Wengen is known internationally for staging the Lauberhorn ski races since 1930. These traditional races consist of a downhill run, slalom, and a combined event. This race holds the distinction of being the most challenging downhill race in addition to being the longest races on the FIS world cup circuit.
Wengen is unique on many counts. There’s something about how the place makes you feel at just being there even before putting your skis or board on. The spectacular mountainscape below and above the borders is a mind blowing experience.
After a tiring day full of skiing, the resort area has an adequate number of nightspots and bars for visitors to relax and have a drink or two.
Wengen also houses The Downhill Only Club, rated as one of the oldest British alpine ski clubs dating back to 1925. The resort is not about skiing alone as there are many activities that are open and enjoyed by non-skiers as well. Skiing may be the main recreational activity here; however, it is a proven fact that a normal visitor will not get board here. If you are
a non-skier, there are enough opportunities available to you to learn ice skating on either of the 2 rinks in town. Besides, one can also get involved in the numerous hiking trails and the occasional sledder flying down the hill.
Accomodation is Wengen is no issue at all as there are a number of hotels, dormitories and apartments open to visitors. Some of the popular places here are Scheidegg Hotels and Bernerhof.
So go ahead and plan your trip to the Wengen Ski resort and I can assure you that you will be very satisfied with your trip once back.
